Fun Facts: The Anniversary of Tom Dempsey's NFL Record Kick

Until the New Orleans Saints won Super Bowl XLIV, the greatest moment in Saints history was Tom Dempsey's NFL record 63 yard field goal.  Dempsey's game winning field goal beat the Detroit Lions 19-17 on November 8, 1970 in the old Tulane Stadium.  Although the record has been tied by Denver's Jason Elam (1998) & San Fransisco's David Akers (2012), it has never been broken.

Happy 42nd Anniversary to Tom Dempsey's NFL record 63 yard field goal.....Who Dat!

Happy Birthday Marie Laveau!

Laveau's Burial Site
Happy Birthday to the New Orleans Queen of Voodoo, Marie Laveau!

Laveau, who was born on September 10, 1794 in New Orleans, is one of the city's most iconic historical figures.  Her mythical status has reached heights like no other, as her tomb in Saint Louis Cemetery #1 is one of the most visited burial sites in the United States.  In fact it attracts so many visitors that it ranks second to only the grave site of Elvis Presley.

To honor Marie Laveau's birthday Liz Genest Smith of gonola.com wrote this great article titled Happy Birthday, Marie Laveau: Nine Legends You Didn't Know.  As you will read in the article there was more to the New Orleans Voodoo Queen than her association with black magic.  Enjoy.

What is This Upcycling Thing?

As defined by Wikipedia, Upcycling is the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or higher environmental value.  In short, upcycling is where we give more value to old products.

The term upcycling was first used by Reiner Pilz of Pilz GmbH in an 1994 interview by Thorton Kay where he said "recycling, I call it downcycling.  They smash bricks, they smash everything.  What we need is upcycling where old products are given more value not less".  In their 2002 book Cradle to Cradle:  Remaking the Way We Make Things, William  McDonough and Michael Braungart state that the goal of upcycling is to prevent the wasting of potentially useful materials by making use of existing ones.
