Fun Facts - McGehee Hall

Lucius McGehee Hall
McGehee Hall, constructed in 1935, is the oldest permanent building on the Southeastern Louisiana University campus.  The building was named in memory of Dr. Lucius McGehee of Hammond, who was one of the founders of Southeastern.

After opening as Hammond Junior College in 1925 rapidly increasing enrollment forced the college to move from two classrooms in Hammond High School to its current location in 1927.  In 1928 the junior college officially became Southeastern Louisiana College and adopted by the State Board of Education.  In 1934 a state bond issue provided for the construction of McGehee Hall and a gymnasium.

McGehee Hall is on the National Register of Historic Places.

What is This Upcycling Thing?

As defined by Wikipedia, Upcycling is the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or higher environmental value.  In short, upcycling is where we give more value to old products.

The term upcycling was first used by Reiner Pilz of Pilz GmbH in an 1994 interview by Thorton Kay where he said "recycling, I call it downcycling.  They smash bricks, they smash everything.  What we need is upcycling where old products are given more value not less".  In their 2002 book Cradle to Cradle:  Remaking the Way We Make Things, William  McDonough and Michael Braungart state that the goal of upcycling is to prevent the wasting of potentially useful materials by making use of existing ones.

Downtown Hammond
The Louisiana Garden Club Federation has named Hammond, LA as one of the cleanest cities in the state of Louisiana for 2012.  This marks the 6th consecutive year that the City of Hammond has been named one of Louisiana's 10 Cleanest Cities.  This year Hammond won category H, which includes cities with a population in the range of 15,000 to 49,999 residents.  The LGCF committee was very complimentary of Hammond and said that during the judging of the contest, which took place between April and May, the judges were even impressed off of the designated routes.
